About Armada Technologies

Armada Technologies is developing a largely passive air lubrication system (PALS) designed to reduce merchant ship fuel consumption.

An air lubrication system reduces the resistance between hull and seawater by distributing air bubbles across the hull surface. Most systems use continuously running compressors; Armada's approach does not.

How it works

  • Water inlet and outlet units are installed in the vessel's double bottom
  • Using the ship's forward motion, water passes through the inlet and a venturi nozzle draws air from deck level
  • The water/air mixture is ejected into the hull boundary layer at each outlet

Reduced power

Instead of high-energy compressors, PALS uses small-capacity pumps and blowers. Armada also describes a self-learning control system intended to improve performance over time. Performance figures are the supplier's own and depend on vessel and operation.
